Shibori merupakan sebuah teknik dalam membuat ragam hias dengan cara membuat ikatan-ikatan kecil, dikerutkan dengan bentuk pola-pola tertentu, kemudian diikat dengan menggunakan benang yang kedap air, dicelup dengan pewarna alam atau sintetis, kemudian difiksasi agar warnanya bisa melekat pada kain, kemudian seluruh ikatan dilepas, diakhiri dengan pencucian agar menghasilkan warna yang bagus dan kuat. Hasil ikatan itulah yang menghasilkan berbagai macam bentuk pattern atau pola-pola ragam hias.
Sekiranya apabila proses tersebut diulang dengan cara yang sama, bisa dipastikan hasilnya akan tetap berbeda. Disinilah nilai-nilai estetis yang melekat pada kain shibori yang dihasilkan berupa bentuk, motif, corak yang memberikan nilai yang sangat berbeda dengan teknik pewarnaan pada kain batik.
Istilah kata Shibori berasal dari kata kerja shiboru, yang memiliki arti memeras atau menekan. Meskipun shibori termasuk kedalam golongan khusus dalam teknik pencelupan tekstil, tetapi pengertiannya lebih menekankan pada pekerjaan yang dilakukan pada bahan lembaran kain serta proses untuk memanipulasi bahan kain. Biasanya teknik lain menghasilkan permukaan dua dimensi, shibori dapat menghasilkan bentuk tiga dimensi dengan cara dilipat, dikisutkan, dijahit, dijalin, atau ditarik dan dipelintir. Bentuk akhir bahan dengan menggunakan metode ini didapat dengan beberapa cara lain, yaitu dengan cara mengikat dan membuat simpul.
Teknik ikat di Indonesia dikenal dengan istilah jumputan (Tie Dye), walaupun tidak persis sama seperti halnya yang dilakukan dengan shibori, setidaknya ada sedikit kesamaan teknik yaitu memberi warna pada kain dengan teknik diikat, disimpul, diwarna.

Shibori is the Japanese word for a variety of ways of embellishing textiles by shaping cloth and securing it before dyeing. The word comes from the verb root shiboru, “to wring, squeeze, press.” Although shibori is used to designate a particular group of resist-dyed textiles, the verb root of the word emphasizes the action performed on cloth, the process of manipulating fabric. Rather than treating cloth as a two-dimensional surface, with shibori it is given a three-dimensional form by folding, crumpling, stitching, plaiting, or plucking and twisting. Cloth shaped by these methods is secured in a number of ways, such as binding and knotting. It is the pliancy of textile and its potential for creating a multitude of shape-resisted designs that the Japanese concept of shibori recognizes and explores. The shibori family of techniques includes numerous resist processes practiced throughout the world. There is a similar technique of resist-dyed textile in Indonesia called ‘Jumputan’ (tie dye). Though it is not exactly identical, but the basic is the same: binding, knotting, and dyeing.
SHIBOTIK TOOLS
- Tying stand. It has a metal arm fitted with a very fine hook, like a bent needle. The worker sits infront of the stand facing the hook. A short bobbin holds the thread used by the worker.
- There are two types of thread used in shibotik production, nylon thread and cotton thread.
- Sewing needle.
- cellotape.
- Board clamps. Flat pieces of wood or acrylic cut to appropriate size and shape are the most usual type of clamp. The term itajime literally means “board clamping.”
- Stick clamps. Flat smooth sticks are also used as clamps. These are placed on both sides of the cloth bundle and bound around with cord.
- PVC pipe. Pipe with 3 or 6 inches in diameter are the most usual type of pipe used in Shibotik making. Choose a good quality pipe so it does not crack if dropped or become distorted when repeatedly subjected to heat required in some types of dyeing.
